THE BEGINNINGS OF SUNDAY SCHOOL

Englishman Robert Raikes, born in 1735, was a Christian layman who was pained to see unschooled children working six days a week in factories or mines. On Sundays, children roamed the streets, often getting into trouble. Most didn’t know how to read or write and knew nothing about Christ or the church.

As Raikes labored to reform England’s prison system, he noticed that many children were imprisoned, stirring him to action on their behalf. He arranged for halls and homes to be used for educational purposes on Sundays, the one day children didn’t have to work. He found volunteers to teach reading, writing and math, as well as the Bible and Christian beliefs.

The first Sunday school class was held in July 1780. Amazingly, by 1788 some 250,000 children were attending such schools. This occurred despite some people’s opposition to the education of lower-class children.

Countless boys and girls have attended Sunday school classes since then, thanks to Raikes, who brought Christ’s light and love to children around the world.

2016 Children's Christmas Service

Sunday, December 18, 2016

To the angels, Christ’s birth meant the arrival of great joy on earth. To the shepherds, He meant hope for all. To the wise men, He represented the greatest gift anybody could ever receive. As we follow the story of Jesus’ coming, we give our children an opportunity to discover what Christmas truly means to them.

More than decorations, sparkling lights on a tree, and presents, we find ultimate satisfaction when we fix our eyes on the eternal gift of Jesus’ life. This Christmas, we invite children to focus on Christ and celebrate the everlasting gift of hope and joy that He brings.

a place of refuge

This past year (2015-2016), Sunday School students brought offerings to class each Sunday with the purpose of donating the money to a mission that they voted on. They chose A Place of Refuge, a home for unwed mothers, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. A Place of Refuge is a self-supporting ministry of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod.

The children raised
$112.76 and issued a challenge to the congregation and encouraged them to match this amount. The total amount raised for 'A Place of Refuge' was $ 336.52!

"DAVID'S DYNASTY"

Since the beginning of the school year, the Sunday school children have been learning about Bethlehem, shepherds, King David and many of his adventures. But most importantly, the children have learned about a very special baby who came from the lineage of David, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Our Children's Christmas Service included all Sunday school and Catechism class students - pre-K to 8th grade (over 30 children). The play featured shepherds in boring ol' Bethlehem, bemoaning the fact that nothing exciting ever happens here. AND WE ALL KNOW HOW THAT TURNED OUT!!!

A very sincere THANK YOU to Abbey Rose, and to all of the other parents, children
and volunteers who helped to make this a colorful and uplifting service.

Enjoy...

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
- Micah 5:2

There's a sleepy little town in Judah-land, south of old Jerusalem
It's where we work and play, where we eat and where we pray.
Home, sweet home is Bethlehem.
And God's been doing something here for generations,
Raising up a family with great expectations.

God testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse,
a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.'
-
Acts 13:22

We are David's dynasty, a royal kind of legacy.
And we're living for the day our King will come to rule and reign.
Hey, hey, hey.
Got a lot of history. Someday all the world will see
How God will save the day when He will come to rule and reign.
Hey, hey, hey. We've David's dynasty.

“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, a King who will reign wisely and do what is just and right in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. This is the name by which he will be called: The Lord Our Righteous Savior.
-
Jeremiah 23:5-6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
- Isaiah 9:6-7

Here's where David was anointed king.
Here is where he lived and breathed.
This little town we love, oh, it's sacred ground to us,
Where God grew our family tree.
Blessed be the tie that binds our hearts together.
One for all and all for one, now and forever.

So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

- Luke 2:4-12

We are David's dynasty, a royal kind of legacy.
And we're living for the day our King will come to rule and reign.
Hey, hey, hey.
Got a lot of history. Someday all the world will see
How God will save the day when He will come to rule and reign.
Hey, hey, hey. We've David's dynasty
.

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
- Luke 2: 13-15

Father, we thank You for Your love and Your many blessings. We thank You for making us part of Your family and Your Son, Jesus, who died for us and rose from the grave. And we thank you that one day, He will come back again, just the way He promised He would. In His name we pray. Amen!

Children's Christmas Service

"Light A Candle"

Sunday, December 15, 2013

In the warm yellow glow of the Christmas Candles
I see the magic of Christmas shining bright, shining bright
Like the star that led the kings and shepherds
All to a tiny stable on that night, Holy night

With the lambs and the donkeys, cows and the camels breathing low
The perfect Child of God was born so long ago

In the dancing flame of the Christmas candles
I hear the whisper of angels soft and clear, soft and clear
As they watched in the night over Baby Jesus
I know they're watching me, always near, always near

I love the Christmas gifts and the trimming of the tree
Like the candles they remind us what Christmas really means

So, tonight as we light our Christmas candles
I'll hold the love of Jesus in my heart, in my heart
And keep the flame where the spirit of Christmas starts

Lyrics from 'The Christmas Candle"

"Jesus - God's Greatest Gift"

December 16, 2012

Oh, come, little children, oh, come, one and all,
To Bethlehem haste to the manger so small.
God's Son for a gift has been sent you this night
To be your Redeemer, your Joy and Delight.

Little children, can you tell,
Do you know the story well,
Ev'ry girl and ev'ry boy,
Why the angels sing for joy
On the Christmas morning?

Yes, we know the story well;
Listen now, and hear us tell,
Ev'ry girl and ev'ry boy,
Why the angels sing for joy
On the Christmas morning.

Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.
The stars in the sky looked down where He lay,
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes.
I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Go tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and ev'ry where;
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born!

While shepherds kept their watching
O'er silent flocks by night,
Behold, throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light.

Down in a lonely manger
The humble Christ was born;
And God sent us salvation
That blessed Christmas morn.

Go tell it on the mountain,
Over the hills and ev'ry where;
Go tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born!

A very sincere Thank You to Abbey Rose,
all of the Sunday School leaders and helpers, the parents, and to all of our
precious children who were involved in this wonderful Children's Christmas Service.

May the joy of Christ's birth
fill your heart with hope and love!

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room
And heav'n and nature sing,
And heav'n and nature sing,
And heav'n, and heav'n and nature sing.

Discovering the Truth About Christmas

Ethan has a new adopted brother,

Michael, who is a trivia buff.

When Michael starts busting some

myths about Christmas to Ethan's friends,

it causes quite a stir.

They begin to wonder,

what does the Bible really tell us?

After reading the Biblical account

of the birth of Jesus,

Lily and Abbey are still confused.

Through it all, everyone

learns that even though some facts

about the first Christmas might not be clear,

the truth about WHY Jesus came

is everywhere in Scripture.
